OARRs: Conducting Successful Meetings

In successful meetings everyone shares a common purpose—a sense of where they are trying to go together. In the most successful meetings, the meeting direction or Outcome is clear.

Whether Roles are formally designated or not, they typically are filled by default. A well-steered meeting has a much better chance of accomplishing its goals. Roles should build on participants’ strengths, tap into their capabilities, and provide an opportunity for growth.

Instructions
Step 1 List the deliverables or desired Outcomes in advance of the meeting or project launch. When possible, draw them from the team during the meeting to gain ownership.
Step 2 Identify the critical activities for the meeting. Sequence them, assigning expected amounts of time to each. Put as much detail into the Agenda as the group needs to feel comfortable.
Step 3 Clarify the Roles of each player or team member.
Step 4 Establish ground Rules that will contribute to conducting a successful meeting.
